The organizing meeting of the Mongolian Geographical Society was held in March 1990, during which the establishment of the Society was discussed, its charter was approved, and the President, Vice President, and leading members were elected. A Council of 51 members was also formed (J. Tserensodnom, Journal of the Mongolian Geographical Society, 1990).

Participants of the meeting emphasized that the Society should play an important role in expanding geographical research in Mongolia, studying the rational relationship between humans and nature, improving geographical education, and concentrating the efforts of geographers in providing geographical and ecological knowledge to the public especially children and youth in order to foster patriotic upbringing.
In order to broaden research, scientific studies, education, and outreach activities, various sections were established under the Mongolian Geographical Society, including landscape studies, socio-economic geography, tourism, information and outreach, education and methodology, and foreign relations and area studies. Leading Mongolian geographers were elected and approved as heads of these sections (J. Tserensodnom, Journal of the Mongolian Geographical Society, 1990).
The structure and activities of the Mongolian Geographical Society were reorganized, and it was officially registered on May 4, 1998. Academician D. Dorjgotov was elected as its President. The Society was led by Academician D. Dorjgotov from 1998 to 2024, by PhD S. Enkh-Amgalan from 2024 to 2025, and since September 2025, Dr. (PhD), Associate Professor D.
